Longing.
A heart that aches to see someone.
An emotion shaped by absence.
It came into being because something is missing, and it lingers because it cannot reach.
Longing is not simply the desire to see someone.
Because there was once time shared together,
because there is no certainty of reaching again, the heart runs ahead and then stops in place.
That is why longing is always in the present tense.
It begins by recalling the past, but it always ends in the now.
Within the word aching lies carefulness before restlessness.
Afraid that if it touches, it might break,
so a name that cannot quite be called is repeated only within the chest.
Longing grows deeper because it does not cling, and it lasts longer because it is not spoken.
